Kitchen Countertops / September 16, 2018 / Edward Taylor.
Whether marble countertops conjure images of luxe elegance or handsome timeworn French kitchens, this classic surface occupies a design territory all its own. With a soft feel, a warmth that’s inimitable and unmistakable, a durability that keeps it in place for decades and a wide range of color choices, marble countertops might be the right choice for your kitchen.
Sorting through the countless choices of any building material can be made easier with the help of industry-independent organizations who give their approval, or certification, to products that meet the organization’s guidelines for sustainability.
Concrete counters can be a terrific green choice if they are sourced locally or cast in place (transporting heavy slabs great distances consumes a lot of energy). Also, look for low-impact aggregates, such as increased coal fly ash, and recycled glass or paper.
Disadvantages: It’s not unusual for concrete, especially when cast in place, to develop tiny hairline cracks as a result of curing and settling. The cracks are typically not structural.
